Wire sizes we buy

Sell Large MCM Wire: 250 Through 1000 kcmil

Large copper and aluminum feeder reels require exact kcmil sizes, continuous lengths and a handling plan. We also buy scrap copper feeder cut ends.

We buy large copper and aluminum reels from California sellers who want to sell MCM wire. That includes usable 250 through 1000 kcmil (MCM) feeder inventory, continuous partial reels and scrap copper cut ends, with each portion evaluated by its actual condition.

Sell MCM wire with size, metal and type kept together

MCM means a thousand circular mils; kcmil expresses the same unit. A 350 MCM reel is therefore 350 kcmil, not 350 mm². These units describe the conductor's nominal metal area, not the cable's finished diameter or voltage rating.

Large conductors appear in parallel feeder runs to switchgear, warehouse distribution, solar home runs and data-center power systems. Those are potential sources of surplus, not evidence that a particular reel has an active reuse outlet. Exact specifications still determine where the inventory may fit.

Our wire sizes and area chart covers the smaller AWG groups too. For a mixed feeder lot, retain the original sizes rather than grouping 4/0 and 250 kcmil under one informal description.

Large-conductor table: 250 through 1000 kcmil

Circular-mil values follow directly from the marked kcmil size. The area conversions are rounded. Typical constructions describe product families, not manufacturer-wide availability or permissible installation uses.

Size, kcmil Circular mils Approx. area, mm² Representative types and construction
250 250,000 126.677 Stranded THHN, XHHW-2, power TC/MC, MV
300 300,000 152.012 Stranded feeder, service and industrial power
350 350,000 177.348 Stranded feeders, power TC/MC, MV
400 400,000 202.683 Stranded copper/aluminum large feeders
500 500,000 253.354 Stranded feeders, MV and industrial power
600 600,000 304.024 Stranded feeders and shielded MV
750 750,000 380.031 Stranded feeders, MV and power TC/MC
1000 1,000,000 506.707 Large feeders, aluminum PV/utility, MV

Conductor count changes the description of an assembly. A single 500 kcmil conductor is not the same inventory as an armored power cable with several large phase conductors and smaller grounds. Report those components as printed instead of using only the largest size.

Copper, aluminum and compact stranding

Aluminum is common in large commercial feeder inventory, including warehouses and data centers. Modern compact aluminum building wire can reduce package weight compared with copper, but the actual gross reel weight still needs confirmation. Copper and aluminum must stay on separate inventory lines.

Our aluminum conductor buying page explains the material distinctions. AA-8000-series building-wire alloys should not be assumed from an aluminum appearance alone, especially when utility cable is included. Use AL, alloy and product information from the tag and legend.

XHHW-2 feeder wire may use compact aluminum or stranded copper. THHN and other feeder families also occur in compressed constructions. Compacting reduces spaces among strands; it does not reduce the nominal kcmil area printed on the cable.

Fine-stranded industrial cable is another category. Keep its original decimal size and ratings intact. A flexible cable with roughly similar area is not an automatic substitute for a conventional building-wire feeder.

Continuous footage drives reuse opportunities

A large partial reel can be worth reviewing as inventory because each foot contains substantial conductor material and manufacturing value. Known continuous footage, an intact legend and sound storage records support that review. A full reel is not automatically reusable if moisture or damage creates uncertainty.

Do not describe a collection of feeder cuts as a single long cable. Identify splices, rewound stock and unequal lengths in related conductor sets. Matching colors and sizes may help identify a former parallel-feeder group, but they do not establish that all reels retain matching footage.

Data-center cable surplus can include large copper and aluminum feeders, while solar and industrial jobs may add tray or shielded power products. For medium-voltage reels, voltage, insulation level, shielding and end protection become central to the evaluation.

Original master lengths vary. Cerrowire's footage reference documents 2500 ft and longer for qualifying reels through 500 kcmil. Its groups for 600 kcmil and 750/1000 kcmil use different footage thresholds. Those examples do not identify what remains on your reel.

Heavy reels need actual weight and access information

Southwire's nominal THHN copper weights include about 1543 lb per 1000 ft for 500 kcmil. For 1000 kcmil, the listed copper weight is about 3087 lb per 1000 ft. Both figures exclude the reel and are not gross shipping weights.

Cable net weight also includes insulation and other cable components. Gross weight includes packaging; tare identifies the empty package. A reel's scale weight must not be treated as recoverable copper, particularly when armor, shields or multiple conductor metals are present.

Loading plans can involve a forklift, suitable trailer or flatbed, depending on the lot and access. Tell us what equipment is actually available rather than assuming pickup equipment from reel size. Our buying and pickup process explains where those arrangements fit without requiring sellers to improvise heavy-reel handling.

Scrap feeder cuts and lawful source records

Large copper cuts can carry significant recoverable metal even when they no longer have a practical continuous reuse length. Separate them from aluminum and from labeled surplus remnants. Shielding, jacket thickness and contamination still affect recovery and processing.

Keep project releases, invoices and ownership records with utility-related material. Agency-owned or formerly agency-owned listed material requires the applicable written disposition certification, not merely possession of a reel. California scrap record and payment requirements apply where covered; this is an informational summary, not legal advice.

Large-reel details to send us

For heavy conductor lots, identification and transport information belong in the same submission. Match each reel number to its photos and inventory line.

  • Photograph the complete 250–1000 kcmil legend, including unusual decimal sizes.
  • Identify copper or aluminum and any compact/compressed or alloy markings.
  • List actual type, voltage, conductor count and ground or shield construction.
  • Show tag length and endpoint footage evidence for each continuous remnant.
  • Report net, tare and gross weights using the tag's own labels.
  • Include flange diameter, overall width and damaged reel components.
  • Photograph intact MV end caps or disclose missing seals and water exposure.
  • Describe forklift availability, loading surface and truck access at the California site.
  • Separate surplus reel counts from bins or bundles of scrap feeder ends.

For lots near our base, Inland Empire wire buying details cover the surrounding region. Pickup is available throughout California, with the written offer and payment method and timing established before collection.

Common questions

Are 500 MCM and 500 kcmil different conductor sizes?

They are two notations for the same nominal area: 500,000 circular mils. MCM is the older term, while kcmil is the modern notation commonly printed on specifications. Neither notation identifies conductor metal or insulation. A copper THHN reel and an aluminum XHHW-2 reel can both say 500 kcmil and still require completely different product and weight evaluations.

Can you review several large feeder remnants as one lot?

Yes, but list each continuous remnant separately. Include type, size, metal, color and verified or estimated length for every reel. Matching tags can help identify related stock, but they do not prove identical remaining footage. Short copper feeder cut ends can be included as a separate scrap portion rather than combined with reusable remnants into one claimed continuous length.

Can a 535.3 kcmil DLO reel be listed as 500 MCM?

No. Preserve 535.3 kcmil and the DLO designation exactly. Fractional sizes are established products in flexible and utility cable families; rounding changes the description. The same rule applies to utility sizes that fall near familiar building-wire sizes. Send the full jacket legend and original tag so we can identify the correct conductor construction and ratings.
