We buy unused aluminum and copper service entrance cable from sellers throughout California. If you want to sell SER cable, show us the full size string and remaining length, not just the largest conductor. Partial reels, project cuts and SEU overstock can all be reviewed as identified inventory.
SER and SEU have different conductor layouts
SE means service entrance; R and U identify construction styles within Type SE cable. These products serve aboveground service entrance work and permitted feeder applications. They belong to our broader catalog of wire and cable types we buy, but need their own descriptions.
SER commonly contains insulated phase conductors, an insulated neutral and a separate equipment grounding conductor. SEU commonly has two insulated conductors surrounded by a helically arranged bare concentric neutral. Both may have a gray outer jacket, so a distant reel photo cannot reliably distinguish them.
Modern aluminum versions commonly use AA-8000-series conductors, XLPE insulation and a PVC jacket. Copper constructions also exist. A typical voltage rating is 600 V; the actual product marking takes priority over a seller's shorthand description.
| Feature to confirm | SER, Style R | SEU, Style U |
|---|---|---|
| Common conductor arrangement | Insulated phases and neutral, plus separate ground | Two insulated conductors with concentric bare neutral |
| Representative aluminum size range | 8 AWG–300 kcmil (MCM) | 8 AWG–4/0 |
| Common surplus packages | Cut lengths and 250/500/1000 ft reels | Project cuts and 250/500/1000 ft reels |
| Useful printed identification | TYPE SE STYLE R | TYPE SE STYLE U |
Those ranges describe representative manufacturer lines, not limits for every brand. Factory bulk reels and custom cut lengths also occur. SEU is not automatically a replacement for a four-wire feeder assembly simply because the largest conductors match.
Read the whole size string before naming the reel
Descriptions such as 2-2-2-4 or 4/0-4/0-4/0-2 often summarize SER assemblies. In a typical phase-phase-neutral-ground description, the first two entries are phases, followed by neutral and ground. Verify that order against the product label before using it in an inventory list.
For an assembly confirmed as 2-2-2-4, that means three 2 AWG conductors and a 4 AWG ground. Do not turn the final 2 in a 4/0-4/0-4/0-2 string into 2/0. The difference changes the construction and amount of metal in the reel.
The 1/0 through 4/0 wire size guide helps separate aught sizes from ordinary numbered AWG sizes. Conductor area is not finished cable diameter. Measuring the gray jacket cannot replace a readable size marking.
Where California SER surplus comes from
Tract construction and multifamily work can leave unused feeder cuts when routing or material schedules change. A contractor may finish one building with several partial reels left for a feeder design that changed on the next building. Distributor cut-to-length stock can leave similar remnants.
Residential lots may also include smaller NM-B and UF-B cable. Keep those coils labeled separately from service entrance assemblies. A mixed lot is easier to describe when each cable family retains its own tag and footage record.
Tell us why the SER became surplus: overbuy, revised feeder schedule, canceled work or a shop inventory cleanup. That history helps distinguish unused cable from removed service material. If the project owner bought the stock, obtain written permission to sell it rather than assuming possession establishes ownership.
How we assess a SER cable lot
Our review starts with metal, conductor configuration and continuous length. An unused, identified SER remnant can retain product value that a gross-weight-only description misses. We evaluate aluminum wire and feeder inventory separately from copper because the metal content and recovery economics differ.
Original reel labels, manufacturer part numbers and intact certification information support identification. We also look for crushed sections, jacket cuts, exposed conductors and evidence of poor storage. A clean outer layer does not prove that everything underneath has the same condition.
One long remnant and a bundle of short cuts are not equivalent inventory, even at the same total footage. Separate those quantities in your description. Do not cut an intact reel into smaller pieces just to make a weight estimate.
Previously installed copper SE cable may instead be considered as scrap copper wire. For covered purchases, California record and payment requirements apply; we confirm the applicable documentation and written terms before pickup. This is a practical summary, not legal advice or an installation approval.
What to send us to sell SER cable
A useful submission connects the exterior legend to the actual conductors and package. Send these SER-specific details:
- A close photo showing TYPE SE STYLE R or STYLE U, rather than only the gray jacket.
- The full conductor-size sequence, including the neutral and separate ground when present.
- AL, alloy or CU markings that establish the circuit-conductor metal.
- A readable voltage marking and any original manufacturer certification label.
- The reel tag, part number and original footage, with a separate estimate of what remains.
- Photos of accessible ends and any jacket damage; keep sound cable intact for identification.
- A count of continuous cuts, identifying which pieces are unused and which were pulled out.
- The California storage city, loading access and invoice or project release supporting ownership.
Do not combine two matching-looking remnants into one stated length. If the footage is uncertain, label it estimated and explain the basis. Accurate uncertainty is more useful than an unsupported exact number.
Keep aboveground SE separate from underground stock
Type SE is not intended for underground installation, including installation in an underground raceway. That distinction matters when a job lot also contains URD secondary distribution cable. Do not group both products under a single description such as aluminum underground feeder.
A 600 V label alone does not establish wet-location or burial suitability. The cable type, additional markings and listing conditions must support the intended use. We identify the stock being offered; buyers and end users remain responsible for verifying installation suitability.
Keep original tags with the matching reels while gathering the lot. If stock has been rewound, say so, because an old reel label may describe the previous contents. Avoid covering the current jacket print with packing tape or an inventory label.
Prepare partial SER reels without losing useful information
Photograph accessible endpoint footage marks before moving a partial reel. Two marks can help establish a continuous segment when the manufacturer's marking scheme is understood. A single printed number does not necessarily mean feet remaining.
Leave separate cut lengths individually identified, and record any splices rather than treating the package as uninterrupted cable. Note broken flanges and whether the reel can be reached by the loading equipment available on site.
Pickup is available anywhere in California, including job sites and tract-home staging yards. The offer and payment method and timing are put in writing before pickup. For a SER lot, clear size strings and honest length records are the most useful preparation.
Common questions
Does a 4/0 SER description tell you the ground size?
No. The shorthand usually names the main conductor size, not the whole assembly. A description such as 4/0-4/0-4/0-2 includes a 2 AWG ground if the manufacturer identifies it that way. A 2/0 ground is a different size. Send the complete jacket legend and reel tag so we can record all conductors without guessing from the largest one.
Can you evaluate SEU left over from a service replacement?
We can review unused SEU remnants when their size, length and ownership are clear. Tell us which pieces never entered service and which were removed during the replacement. SEU's concentric neutral construction differs from SER with a separate equipment ground. We keep those descriptions separate, and previously installed copper material may belong in the scrap category rather than reusable stock.
Is gray service entrance cable the same as underground feeder cable?
Gray sheathing does not establish an underground rating. Type SE cable is not for underground installation, including underground raceways. URD, USE-2 and UF-B are separate products with their own markings and limitations. For a sale, photograph the printed type instead of describing the cable only as gray feeder. Buyers and end users must verify any proposed installation against the actual product listing.
