California Wire Buyers buys flexible copper welding cable and DLO from sellers within California. You can sell welding cable as unused reel stock, leftover cuts or worn copper leads, but we evaluate those conditions differently. Tell us which material is new surplus and which has already been in service.
Welding cable and DLO are not the same cable
Welding cable is a flexible single conductor for electrode-holder and work-return connections. Fine-stranded bare copper, often Class K rope-lay, makes it easy to move during welding work. An elastomeric covering protects the conductor, but the exact compound and ratings depend on the product.
EPDM is one documented construction: Southwire's welding specification identifies flexible bare copper and EPDM insulation. If your older label describes another compound, such as neoprene, include that wording rather than relabeling it from appearance. Black is familiar, while red and other colors are also encountered.
DLO means diesel-locomotive cable. Its common construction is fine-stranded tinned copper, EPR insulation and a CPE jacket. It is a heavy-duty power-cable family with different stranding, covering and listing details from ordinary welding leads.
Neither flexibility nor a voltage number makes these products generic building wire. For multiconductor flexible products in the same lot, use our portable cord and power cable page.
Sizes, ratings and reel lengths worth recording
The following are representative family ranges, not manufacturing limits for every brand. Record the actual size before estimating the lot's value.
| Product | Representative sizes | Ratings to verify | Common package examples |
|---|---|---|---|
| Welding cable | 6 AWG–500 kcmil (MCM) | 600 V for the specified welding application | 100, 250 or 500 ft; bulk reels and cuts |
| DLO | 14 AWG–1111 kcmil | Commonly 2000 V, 90°C wet/dry | 500 or 1000 ft reels; ordered cuts |
| Aught-size flexible cable | 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 | Depends on the actual welding or DLO product | Individual lengths and partial reels |
DLO may also appear as 262.6, 313.3, 373.7, 444.4, 535.3 or 646.4 kcmil. Those numbers are meaningful. Do not replace them with the nearest feeder size when making a list.
For 1/0 through 4/0, keep the slash-zero notation. A 1 AWG reel is not a 1/0 reel. Our aught-size wire guide covers these size labels across several cable families.
Fine strands do not automatically create more nominal copper area or higher permissible ampacity. They change flexibility and termination requirements. End users must verify the conductor, listing and compatible connections for any intended application.
The jacket legend decides the listing
Look for the manufacturer, WELDING CABLE or DLO designation, size, voltage and temperature. Record certification marks only when they are actually present. An MSHA marking is not the same thing as a building-wire listing.
Some welding products are specifically limited to welding service. A 600 V label is not blanket permission for feeder use. Conversely, particular flexible products can carry an additional evaluated designation; the complete legend and product sheet settle that question.
DLO often has separate RHH/RHW-2 markings. Those additional ratings matter when assessing potential reuse beyond the original application. A tray-use marking can also be size-dependent, so do not assume every DLO gauge carries identical permissions.
Save the factory tag even if a reel is nearly empty. An old shop note saying 'generator cable' describes where someone used it, not its construction. We need the printed type to distinguish welding, DLO and other flexible single-conductor cable.
California sources: shop leads, generators and film power
Fabrication shops, industrial maintenance departments and shipyard work can produce unused welding-cable remnants and worn lead sets. Generator and temporary-power projects may leave flexible power cable with different listings. Separate those categories before describing the lot as one product.
Film, television and live-event work in Los Angeles County can involve DLO or other single-conductor feeder products. Sellers may call grouped leads 'banded cable.' That description does not prove the individual conductors are DLO; photograph each printed type and any attached connectors.
Replaced equipment, job overbuys and storeroom cleanouts produce different conditions. A reel that stayed in storage should not be described as used merely because it is partial. Leads removed from service should not be described as new because their jackets were cleaned.
If a facility, customer or agency owns the material, obtain the appropriate release. Government-owned shipyard material requires documented authority to sell; possession at a contractor's shop is not enough.
Reusable lengths versus worn copper leads
We assess unused, traceable lengths for product value before treating them as metal. Remaining continuous length matters alongside the size, color and rating. Several joined or separate leads do not become one factory-length reel because their total footage is similar.
For used cable, show abrasion, flattened sections, heat damage, jacket cracks and repairs. Photograph attached holders, clamps, lugs or plugs as part of the description. Their presence does not establish that the cable or assembly is fit for service.
Short, damaged or uncertain lengths may belong with scrap copper wire. DLO's tin coating remains a distinction for scrap grading, and the whole jacketed weight is not copper weight. We follow applicable California scrap-record and payment rules; this is informational, not legal advice.
Our wire types catalog helps sort flexible leads from other surplus. Offers are written before pickup, with payment method and timing agreed in writing rather than assumed from a scrap description.
What to send for welding cable or DLO evaluation
- Clear print showing WELDING CABLE, DLO and every additional conductor designation.
- Exact AWG or fractional-kcmil size for each reel or group of leads.
- Photos of original tags, part numbers, voltage and temperature markings.
- Existing end views showing bare or tinned copper and the visible strand construction.
- Length per continuous piece, number of matching pieces and any repaired or joined sections.
- Jacket color and close views of burns, exposed strands, crushed areas or oil-related deterioration.
- Pictures of attached connectors, clamps or holders, without dismantling a sound assembly.
- California storage location, reel weight information, loading arrangements and authorization to sell.
Retain the separate identities of matching-looking black leads. A welding reel and a dual-rated DLO reel can have very different reuse prospects even at the same conductor size.
Common questions
Is silver-colored DLO aluminum cable?
Not necessarily. DLO commonly uses tinned copper, which has a silver-colored coating over copper. We check the manufacturer's description and cable markings before identifying the metal. A photograph of an existing exposed end can help, but appearance alone is not conclusive. Leave sound cable intact and include the original part number when available.
Does fine stranding mean my 2/0 welding cable has extra copper?
Fine stranding provides flexibility; it does not increase the nominal metal area of a 2/0 conductor. Welding leads can still contain substantial copper because they use a large single conductor. Insulation thickness, length and actual size affect metal recovery. We do not calculate copper weight from the number of visible strands or the outside diameter alone.
Should I round a 535.3 kcmil DLO size to 500 kcmil?
Keep 535.3 kcmil exactly as printed. DLO includes fractional sizes that are not ordinary building-wire sizes, and rounding can misidentify the product. Photograph the number together with DLO, voltage and any additional RHH or RHW-2 marking. The precise size helps us assess both potential reuse and the conductor metal in the lot.
